HP DC5100 Compact Desktop PC
A great choice for either corporate desktop use or as a workhorse for the home, this small form-factor PC packs full-sized desktop grade hardware into a small case. The drawbacks are obvious (proprietary parts, limited upgradeability), but for the average user, this isn’t any worse than owning a laptop.

There is such a thing as a low profile pci-x video card (there are even pci-x1 video cards), and they are in fact very common. As for the DC5100, I pulled two of them from the garbage and these little troopers are great. My mind was blown when I saw I could boot a 64 bit OS off of one of these, and since they also have 4 DDR2 slots, in theory you can run 32gb of ram with one core. I just wish they had more than 1 molex plug in there, I guess I’ll just have to kludge a splitter together.

Hey, I was wondering how much of a power-supply the mother-board in the base-model can handle? And I wanna know if the base-model can handle 4 GB of ram?

Iv got a Compaq d530 SFF its vary similar to this computer, the only problem I had with it was the power supply blew.

@bbishoppcm Can’t say I knew them, they might have been before my time, I graduated NHSS in 2008.

I seen one of these at a Barnes & Noble bookstore, the same day I got my NOOKcolor. They are loud, but cool.

Nah, IBM’s thinkcentres were SMALLER than those HPs (with just as many ports), and had full-height PCI slots through the use of a riser card. The cases were much easier to open too (two little tabs on each side, and the cover flipped up on a hinge, rather than sliding off which is more cumbersome).
Also, I DO have one of those HPs with a half-height nvidia geforce card. Pretty decent GPU.

Ive always had good luck with HP products. Here too in a realtors office I was in, they had these computers.
We also used to have something similar in our schools, but I cannot remember who made them. I really like that they are serviceable with virtually no tools at all.

HP makes the best computers

@bbishoppcm Most likely that is the reason for failure. We took them out of storage (were stored for about 2 months in decent conditions) and when plugged them in, 1 out of 10-15 would blow up!

those are still used at my old school!

@ncrdisabled In the school district, we PM our machines once a year. The amount of dust in these machines ranges from nearly nothing at all, to HOLY HELL!!
February 12th, 2012 at 1:06 am
When I worked for NCR we supported same machines only lowes used the in the paint dept and kitchen cabinets dept I can tell you this the floppies dics and hard drives failed most of the time it was because the computers were housed at floor level the failures got so high Lowes changed there support contract to cover PM the machines every 6 months I never seen so much in my life . Those computers would run with all the fans clogged and not running

I serviced one of these machines a few months ago and I, too, was impressed by the thoughtful design.

@doshindude Nashua High? No, these were off-lease corporate machines. A real estate agent bought them. Did you know Bob Torpey or Nicole Tomaselli by any chance? I didn’t know you were from NH!
