Wozniak produced a really great design in the Apple 1. Steve Wozniak designed a microcomputer system that used a minimum number of integrated circuits (IC’s) and was a working computer — you did have to add some power supply transformers , keyboard, and a display device ( usually a TV monitor) to the Apple 1. Wozniak also wrote the Basic program and I think he mostly hand assembled it and of course he wrote the monitor program as well. The Apple 1 and 2 are his creations and they set the microcomputer business off and running. The Apple 1 did not sell in large numbers – it is reported only 200 were made . Most folks had no idea what to use it for or how build it into a working system. Some computer stores purchased the Apple 1 board and made it into a working system with keyboard and other needed parts – put it in a wooded case and sold it ready to go. The reason for the low numbers is Steve Wozniak realized the limitations of the Apple 1 as soon as they started to market it and designed the Apple 2 to overcome the limitations of the Apple 1 – added a good many new and useful features.
